Congratulations on your new hardwood floors! With the right care, they'll stay beautiful for decades. Here's our complete guide to maintaining your investment.
Daily & Weekly Care
Sweep or dust mop daily in high-traffic areas to remove grit and debris that can scratch the finish. Use a soft-bristle broom or microfiber dust mop — avoid stiff bristles that can mar the surface.
Vacuum weekly using a hardwood-specific attachment. Never use a beater bar attachment, as this can scratch and dull the finish.
Cleaning
Use only pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaners recommended by your flooring manufacturer. Spray lightly onto a microfiber mop — never pour liquid directly on the floor. Avoid steam mops, wet mops, and vinegar-based cleaners, which can damage the finish and cause warping over time.
Preventing Damage
- Use felt pads on all furniture legs and replace them regularly
- Place mats at all exterior doorways to catch dirt and moisture
- Use area rugs in high-traffic zones and under dining tables
- Keep pets' nails trimmed to prevent scratching
- Maintain humidity between 35–55% year-round to prevent gaps and cupping
- Use curtains or UV film on windows to reduce sun fading
Dealing with Spills
Wipe up spills immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Never let liquid sit on hardwood — even water can cause staining and warping if left too long.
Long-Term Maintenance
Have your floors professionally screened (light sanding) and recoated every 3–5 years in high-traffic areas. This refreshes the protective finish without a full sanding, extending the time between major refinishes.
